The journey of LWDC
Shortly after independence, the Government of the Republic of Namibia (GRN), through the Ministry of Finance, mooted the idea of establishing waterfront developments at various sites around the country with the aim of creating growth points.
Lüderitz became a beneficiary as one of the sites to benefit from ‘seed’ funds from Government through the Ministry 0f Finance, to establish waterfront company, with a sole purpose to play a facilitating role in the economic revival of the town.
Unlike other public enterprises established through Acts of Parliament, LWDC is a state-owned enterprise, established in 1995 through a Cabinet Resolution as a non-profit Association under Section 21 of the Companies Act.
Initially established as a non-commercial entity, which was to serve as a catalyst to stimulate socio-economic development such as trade, tourism growth and investment promotion in the Lüderitz area.
This came about given that Lüderitz was seen as possessing vast, untapped tourism potential due to its natural, historical features and location.
One of the immediate assignments of LWDC leadership was to create much needed enabling environment at the town, promote investors’ confidence and hope that may lead to the economic rejuvenation of the town; and by introducing a phase approach people centred development projects which comes with multiple socio-economic opportunities, including employment and private sector growth.
